WWF and Living Himalayas

Not all of us have been lucky enough to experience the beauty of the Eastern Himalayas for ourselves. For those who have, no words can do it justice. For it is one of the most majestic places on earth; an enchanted Shangri-La rolling across north-east India, Nepal and Bhutan.

And in the midst of its serene valleys and high mountains, roam some of the world’s most iconic and endangered wildlife species: the snow leopard, the Bengal tiger, the Asian elephant. Alongside them, indigenous communities live and thousands of plant and herb species thrive (many of them found nowhere else on the planet).

 

Beauty under threat

Yet despite its riches, the Eastern Himalayas is an environmentally fragile region facing many threats: climate change is melting its mighty glaciers; poachers are emptying its forests of rare wildlife; overharvesting is thinning herb populations; and deforestation is putting an unprecedented strain on its natural landscapes and habitats.

WWF has been working in the Eastern Himalayas since the charity was founded in 1961. With the launch of its Living Himalayas Initiative, it is stepping up conservation efforts to forge a sustainable future for the region and the communities who live there.

 

WWF and Pukka taking action

The aim of the Living Himalayas Initiative is to make sure that the plant and animal species can thrive, whilst at the same time ensure local communities can maintain and improve their livelihoods.

To do this, WWF is planning to conserve, protect and connect a mosaic of forests, grasslands and wetlands covering more than 50,000km2.

In addition, the charity wants to develop sustainable use of the natural resources from the forests, grasslands and freshwater lakes in the area, whilst combatting poaching and better understanding the effects of climate change on the region.

And we want to help.

 

Time for Pukka tea

Last year, we were able to raise over £66,000 to help WWF’s conservation efforts around the world with the launch of our specially-blended FairWild Peppermint and Licorice tea.

This year, we’re raising funds specifically for WWF’s Living Himalayas Initiative by creating more delicious blends, in particular four new super green teas: Supreme Matcha Green; Clean Green; Serene Jasmine Green and Cool Mint Green.

Two of our four, Serene Jasmine Green tea and Clean Green tea, are both certified FairWild (a standard which promotes the sustainable use of wild collected plant ingredients and which WWF helped to create).

 

Give with a green brew

With each sale of these teas we’ll donate 20p to WWF-UK. We’re hoping to raise a minimum of £50,000 for WWF, and you can help simply by choosing Pukka greens the next time you’re shopping for your morning, afternoon or evening brew.

You’ll find our special WWF teas at most health food shops and supermarkets. Alternatively, they’re available to buy online.

So, here’s to incredible Pukka green tea; a successful partnership with a wonderful conservation charity; and – most importantly of all – a thriving future for the Eastern Himalayas.

My main responsibility at Pukka is to make sure the herbs we source are Pukka – in other words, that they are grown, collected and processed in ways that meet our sustainability, quality and Fair for Life standards. This means that I spend a lot of time visiting and working with our suppliers, and am often behind the camera taking photos and videos for the website. With a background in plant conservation, I am passionate about driving Pukka’s vision of ‘conservation through commerce’.
